Is Voting For Everyone?

November 8th 2006 14:34
Odd Situation

This is my opinion and outlook. If you don't like it, don't read it!

Yesterday was Election Day in the United States. Where I live there are a lot of different people from many countries, whether it is the Middle East, China, Africa, or other various areas and countries of the world. The reason I mention this is because of what I saw at the polling precinct yesterday afternoon. There happened to be a husband and wife there that was from another country, and just happened to be Muslim. They did not speak English while there, but that is not what caught my attention. What caught my attention was how they were voting.

The man was standing with the woman while she was voting, speaking in another language, and then pointing to what she needed to select. I have no idea what they were saying nor which way they voted, but this is not the point. The point is that once she was finished, he had her step over to the side out of the voting area and then proceeded to vote for himself. Here is my problem with this: I really do understand that we cannot have ballots in every language or people in every precinct to translate, HOWEVER, is it right to have this woman’s husband vote with her? I cannot say for sure if he was telling her HOW to vote, but what if he was? I know in quite a few Muslim cultures the man is in charge of EVERYTHING and his wife does what he tells her to do. Could this have been what happened here? ABSOLUTELY! But do I know for sure? No.

For a Limited Time: Yours free for voting!

For the sake of blogging, let’s say that is what happened. Her husband told her to vote for certain candidates and then he was free to choose who he wanted without her help. Is this fair? And how often does this happen? There was no help from any of the poll workers, or any concern shown. So would it had been okay if my husband joined me at the polling station and told be what to vote? Since we speak English and you can tell we are not from another country, would the poll workers question us? It’s something to think about.

Blessed Be

I think speaking English, at least broken English, should be mandatory prior to voting. I don't believe the woman's husband should have been able to assist in the voting process. I believe your points are valid.

Looking forward to reading more of your posts... this is my first, but your subject matter has captured my interest.
