Choking for Jesus

November 3rd 2006 18:47
A Sacrifice for Faith

I’m not sure where this man got his religious information from, but even I as a Wiccan am aware that Jesus would not want a follower to choke their child to death as a sacrifice! Apparently a man from Tennessee decided it would be a good idea to choke his 2 year old son to death as a sacrifice to God. I have no idea what would cause someone to do this, except for a mental illness. The thing is that he is also married and you would think that his wife would not allow him to be alone with the child, especially since she knew he had a mental illness for years!!!!

So, the prosecutors cut him a deal and only gave him probation as long as he undergoes mental health treatment. WTF? Yes, I agree that he needs help, HOWEVER someone needs to be blamed for this incident. What about the child? He has to grow up with the fact that his own father tried to choke him to death for God and Jesus! Apparently had the wife not torn her son away from him, he probably would have succeeded. She admitted that he has battled mental illness for many years. She also said “he would become psychotic and start talking about God and Jesus and religion."

So who is to really blame for this?
Who's at Fault?
The article doesn’t state if the man was being medicated or had been seeing a professional for his mental illness. If this man was not being treated then who is at fault? I would think it would partially be the wife at fault, especially if he is too mentally impaired to realize that he is not mentally stable and needs help. I really can’t believe that neither the husband nor wife was charged with really any wrong doing here! Yes, get him the help he needs, but someone needs to be held accountable for what this little boy had to go through. The article also did not state whether the child remains with the family or if he was placed in foster care, for fear of another episode occurring.

What ever the outcome with the child was, I surely hope that they are taking all the steps needed to make sure this little boy is not psychologically harmed by what happened. I understand he is only 2 years old, but things can tend to remain subconsciously for a lifetime. Plus, what about the media coverage? I’m sure if he doesn’t remember later on in life, then he will be reminded somehow at sometime by the media.

Another funny thing about this story…do you honestly think that if this was a non-Christian person (Muslim, Wiccan, Hinduist, etc) having tried to choke their child to death as a sacrifice to their God, that they would have been given the same sentencing? I highly doubt it.

Blessed Be

It's odd what people do in the name of God. While reading your story, I was having flashes of Sunday school lessons. Wasn't it Joseph who was meant to sacrifice his son and the angels stopped him just in the nick of time? I remember something about blood on the doors in connection with that story. And then, of course, the Bible tales of God sacrificing his only son and letting him suffer on a cross for several days. It doesn't surprise me, then, that this religion produces extremists who aren't able to make the scriptures apply to their life in modern terms.

Of course, the extremists and fanatics aren't limited to Christianity - they are woven into the very fabric of society and in every religion. There are crazy Christians, Fruit-Loop Catholics, weird Wiccans, and aggressive Muslims. Sadly, when one apple is bad, it reflects poorly on the whole crop.

Interesting insights.

P.S. - I totally agree - someone needs to be held accountable for what was done to that child!

I completely agree with your analogy about bad apples. And you're right...it's not just Catholics or other
Christians....there are bad apples in each religion. Unfortunately it is the bad apple that you normally
hear more about than not.

In another post on another subject of yours, I made the comment that religion leaves a sour taste in my mouth and that I blame religion for many of the world's issues, past and present (though not solely, there are other contributing factors, of course). Now I'm wondering if the issues I have, the sour taste, may be those bad apples and not "religion" itself. Interesting thought to tinker with.
